Erik ten Hag’s “bizarre” decision in Man Utd’s 7-0 rout of Barnsley leaves fans bewildered
Manchester United fans were left surprised by one of Erik ten Hag’s choices during their dominant 7-0 victory over Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.
On Tuesday night, United began their Carabao Cup campaign by hosting Barnsley at Old Trafford, a League One team. Goals from Marcus Rashford, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, and Christian Eriksen ensured a comfortable night for Ten Hag’s side, with the scoreline hitting 5-0 by the 62nd minute.
Despite the comfortable lead, Ten Hag made a surprising move by bringing on captain Bruno Fernandes for new signing Manuel Ugarte. This decision caught fans off guard, especially considering the score.
One fan on social media reacted: “Crazy bringing Bruno on in this game.” Another questioned: “Why make such changes? With all the injuries in the squad, why not rest them for the league? ETH is losing touch.”
A third fan commented: “Why not give Wheatley some minutes? Missed a chance to let him have a proper run.” Another chimed in: “No need for sympathy.” One more remarked: “Risking regular starters at 5-0 makes no sense to me.”
However, some supported the move, with one fan saying: “I love this mentality. We play every game like it’s a final.”
After the match, Ten Hag shared his thoughts: “The start was tough, but once we got into shape, it wasn’t so strange since this team hadn’t played together before. Once we found our rhythm, the goals started flowing. Rashford’s goal was fantastic, and we were sharp in front of goal.”
He added: “The key was finding the right shape and attitude. We were fully focused and played exceptionally well. The fans enjoyed it, and you could feel the strong connection between the team and supporters. We gave them some great goals to celebrate.”
