Erik ten Hag has finally found his perfect Luke Shaw alternative as Man Utd solve problem position It’s been a major problem position for United for years and Ten Hag has finally got the answer! 👀
Luke Shaw, despite being part of the England squad for the Euros, has not yet played for Manchester United this season due to ongoing injury issues. His last game for the club was in February against Luton Town, and since then, he has been battling to regain full fitness.
In Shaw’s absence, manager Erik ten Hag gave 20-year-old Toby Collyer a chance during United’s 7-0 victory over Barnsley in the Carabao Cup. This was Collyer’s first start at Old Trafford, following his recent Premier League debut. Though typically not a left-back, Collyer stepped up impressively, contributing to the team’s clean sheet and their advancement in the competition.
Collyer, who joined Manchester United in March 2022 after leaving Brighton and Hove Albion, signed a three-year contract with the club, keeping him at United until the summer of 2025. At Brighton since age 12, he left after failing to agree on a new deal. During his first season with United, Collyer stood out with the under-21 side in both Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy.
Before the 2023/24 campaign, Collyer was included in the first-team squad for United’s pre-season opener against Leeds United on July 12, 2023. Although he didn’t play in that game, he made his senior debut two weeks later in a 3-1 loss to Wrexham, where he started the match.
So far this season, Collyer has featured in three games, including a substitute appearance in the FA Community Shield against Manchester City.
