During Liverpool’s pre-season tour in the USA, manager Arne Slot gave several young players a chance to shine, but Billy Koumetio was not among them, reflecting his current status at the club.

Reports from Football Insider indicate that Liverpool has informed the 21-year-old defender that he is free to seek a new team before the transfer window closes on August 30, as he is not part of Slot’s plans.

With interest from Scottish and Football League teams, Koumetio is likely to make a permanent move, particularly since his contract ends next summer.

Koumetio probably grasped his uncertain future at Liverpool when he was left out of the U.S. tour. His loan spells at Austria Vienna, Dunkerque, and Blackburn, where he played only 21 games combined, did not strengthen his position.

His senior appearances for Liverpool were limited to a Champions League match against Midtjylland in December 2020 and a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Leicester a year later.

Jarell Quansah, who is slightly younger, has overtaken him in the first-team hierarchy.

Liverpool currently has more than the maximum of 25 ‘overage’ players for domestic and European competitions, including Koumetio, who will turn 22 in November but is considered ‘homegrown’.

For Slot to bring in new players like Anthony Gordon, Giorgi Mamardashvili, or Willian Pacho, he must sell or loan out current squad members or entirely omit some fringe players.

It would be unfair for Koumetio to remain on the sidelines, so a transfer to another club would be advantageous for his career, enabling him to fulfill the potential that once earned him a spot in Liverpool’s first team.
