Bacary Sagna has suggested that Paul Pogba might welcome the opportunity to make a third return to Manchester United, particularly under the guidance of current manager Ruben Amorim.
The 31-year-old French World Cup winner is currently a free agent after parting ways with Juventus earlier this month. Pogba’s second stint with the Italian club was brief, as he managed only 12 appearances before a doping scandal disrupted his career.
In September 2023, Pogba received a four-year suspension after testing positive for a banned substance. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) later reduced the ban to 18 months, ruling that the substance had been consumed unintentionally. This decision allows Pogba to resume training in January 2024, with a potential return to competitive football in March.
Despite these setbacks, Pogba’s abilities on the pitch remain undisputed, and his former France teammate, Sagna, believes a reunion with Manchester United could be a possibility. The ex-Arsenal and Manchester City defender expressed confidence in Pogba’s ability to flourish under Amorim’s leadership.
Speaking to Mega Dice, Sagna commented:
“The environment at Manchester United is very different now compared to Paul’s previous spells. They have a young and dynamic coach who can relate to players on their level. Someone like Paul, with his talent and experience, could really thrive under Amorim. Paul genuinely loves United, and I believe he’d seize the chance to return.”
Sagna also reflected on Pogba’s earlier challenges at Old Trafford, attributing some of the difficulties to the club’s struggles during that period:
“I’ve had several conversations with Paul, and it’s clear he has a deep affection for United. The issues he encountered weren’t entirely his fault—it was a challenging time for the club, and many players found it hard to perform.”
Manchester United’s midfield has been under strain this season due to injuries to key players like Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte. Their recent 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town further underscored the pressure, with both Casemiro and Christian Eriksen having to leave the field during the match.
If Pogba becomes eligible in March, he could provide a much-needed boost to United’s midfield. While it’s unclear if Amorim envisions Pogba as part of his long-term strategy, Sagna’s remarks suggest that a return to Old Trafford remains a pl
ausible scenario.
