Roy Keane delivered a sharp critique of Manchester United’s performance in their 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town, focusing on their inability to build on an early lead and their overly cautious strategy after scoring. Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane expressed disappointment in United’s passive approach, arguing they missed a valuable chance to kickstart Rúben Amorim’s managerial era on a positive note.

United began promisingly at Portman Road, with Marcus Rashford finding the back of the net just two minutes into the match. His goal came from a well-placed cross by Amad Diallo, hinting at a strong start under Amorim’s leadership. However, Ipswich quickly found their footing. Andre Onana’s impressive save kept out Liam Delap, but Ipswich eventually leveled the score through Omari Hutchinson’s deflected effort shortly before halftime.

Keane commended the early goal but didn’t hold back in criticizing United’s subsequent lack of intensity.

“It was the ideal start—a goal within the first minute,” Keane noted. “Rashford scores, though it wasn’t the cleanest connection, and you can question the Ipswich keeper. Still, that’s exactly the kind of proactive play you expect from wing-backs—a great way to open the game.”

However, Keane’s optimism shifted as he dissected United’s performance after the goal.

“After that, what happened? Nothing. Ipswich earned their equalizer,” he stated. “United had the perfect beginning, but then they just sat back. I kept wondering, what are they waiting for? They should have kept pressing Ipswich, but instead, they fell into a defensive shell, essentially inviting Ipswich to take control. They gave them all the momentum they needed.”

Keane’s analysis pointed to a familiar problem for United: a lack of consistency and assertiveness in maintaining control during games. While Amorim’s tenure is still in its early stages, Keane’s remarks serve as a reminder of the high expectations surrounding a club eager to restore its former

dominance.
