Chelsea supporters directed explicit and hostile chants toward co-owner Behdad Eghbali and the wider ownership group during their disappointing away defeat to Fulham.
Incoming Blues boss Liam Rosenior watched from the stands as his new team succumbed to a 2-1 loss against their west London rivals. Eghbali was also in attendance, sitting alongside the former Strasbourg and Hull City manager in the Craven Cottage stands, while U21s coach Calum McFarlane supervised operations from the dugout.
All three would have been well within earshot of the traveling Chelsea contingent, who initially began by chanting former owner Roman Abramovich’s name during the first half. The tone then shifted considerably, becoming increasingly confrontational toward Eghbali and the current ownership structure.
Around the 60-minute mark, the away supporters could be heard repeatedly belting out: “We don’t care about Clearlake, they don’t care about us, all we care about is Chelsea FC.”
There were also brief but pointed renditions of “F*** off Eghbali” and “F*** off Eghbali, you’re not wanted here.”
Interestingly, however, no chants targeting the former Strasbourg and Hull City boss emerged from the away section at Craven Cottage.
The vocal backing for Abramovich suggests Chelsea fans are yearning for the era when the club actively pursued elite managers with proven track records of delivering major honors.
It’s fair to acknowledge that Rosenior doesn’t fit the traditional mold of an Abramovich-style appointment, though the current BlueCo and Clearlake ownership clearly believe the Englishman has the necessary credentials. However, the sentiment among the more skeptical elements of the Stamford Bridge faithful would hardly have been improved by watching their side fall to one of their most intense local adversaries.
A significant portion of Chelsea’s supporter base has voiced serious dissatisfaction with the Clearlake and BlueCo ownership groups. Discontent has been steadily simmering ever since they made the decision to part ways with the popular Thomas Tuchel in the summer of 2022.
Moreover, on the very day Rosenior’s appointment was confirmed, the Chelsea Supporters Trust (CST) issued demands for ‘greater clarity, accountability, and meaningful engagement’ from the ownership hierarchy.
The CST also revealed some damning statistics: 53.7 per cent of its members stated they have ‘absolutely no confidence’ in the ownership’s football-related decision-making, while 36.9 per cent reported having ‘very minimal confidence’. A further 5.8 per cent of members declared themselves neutral, with only a meager 4.48 per cent claiming they possess either a ‘reasonable degree of confidence’ or ‘substantial confidence’.
Meanwhile, when it came to evaluating sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, 43.2 per cent selected the ‘not fit for purpose’ assessment, with a further 42.69 per cent maintaining there are ‘serious shortcomings’ within Chelsea’s existing sporting infrastructure.
