‘I gave him the chance to leave in September transfer but he decided to Stay, he will be on the Bench till January Window and his contract will not be Renewed-Pep Guardiola says ‘intelligent’ £42m player could’ve actually left Man City this summer
Kalvin Phillips has now been told to stay at Manchester City – amid rumours he is eyeing an exit in 2024.
It was Newcastle No.9 Callum Wilson who persuaded the England international to stay put.
So, what was said about Kalvin Phillips? Let’s have a look…
What’s the story?
Well – according to ESPN – the Manchester City No.4 is now mulling an exit from the Etihad Stadium after Pep Guardiola disregarded him in Rodri’s absence.
Phillips himself even remarked “I want minutes” after England’s 3-1 triumph over Italy on Tuesday.
Now – however – Wilson has advised his fellow countryman to stay at Manchester City.
The 31-year-old said: “I think it all depends on the individual and what you want. You continue at Man City, you conclude your career with several trophies and if it is something that appeals to you, then terrific.
“He still so young, though. He’s a top player. He’ll feel – and I feel – he can contribute to that City squad. The only thing is you have someone in Rodri who is his rival, who is incredibly good. It’s very difficult. Would I leave City? Maybe on loan, but I would still want to be a Man City player, to be honest.
“I would stay put and fight.”
Kalvin Phillips should quit Manchester City
By the sounds of it, Wilson’s explanation feels more like one tied to the status of being employed by Manchester City — as opposed to actually being a valued member of the squad.
No 27-year-old footballer at this level should be pleased with two Premier League starts in almost 18 months, so we have to disagree with Wilson.
Phillips must leave Manchester City if he still backs himself to perform to a high quality in the Premier League — and wants to be recognised as someone other than a mere squad option.
Interestingly, Wilson and the man from Yorkshire could soon become teammates – the Northern Echo think Newcastle are on red alert in case he becomes available this winter.
Be sure to keep a watch on the situation regarding Phillips, as anything could happen in January.
