VERY SAD Chelsea News has been announced this morning as former Chelsea Player And Manager lost his life this morning after a brief Illness
Following a protracted illness, former England manager Terry Venables passed away at the age of 80, according to his family.
Between 1994 and 1996, Venables managed England. During his tenure, the Three Lions made it to the Euro 1996 semifinals when Germany eliminated them on penalties.
He also enjoyed periods of success as Barcelona’s and Tottenham’s manager.
“We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness,” his family said in a statement.
In order to allow us to grieve the death of this wonderful man, who we were so fortunate to have in our lives, we would ask that privacy be granted during this really sad time.
“The League Managers Association is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of LMA member and former LMA President Terry Venables,” the League Managers Association said in a statement.
“Yvette and the entire Terry family are very much in our thoughts and prayers at this time.”
Venables, who was born in Dagenham in 1943, played for 16 years, making over 200 appearances for Chelsea in addition to over 100 games for Tottenham and QPR.
He had success in his first stint in the dugout in 1976, first at Crystal Palace and then at QPR, before taking over at Barcelona in 1984.
In his first season in charge, he managed Gary Lineker to La Liga victory at Camp Nou, where the player paid glowing tribute to him, calling him “the most innovative coach I have ever played under.”
After leaving Tottenham in 1987 and returning to England, Venables guided the team to the FA Cup in 1991.
After England’s 1994 USA qualifying defeat, the national team job beckoned. His team had a great time defeating Scotland and the Netherlands in the group stages at Euro 96, then defeated Spain on penalties in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, England suffered a bitter penalty shoot-out loss to eventual victors Germany.
Following his departure from England, Venables managed Australia for a year before coming back to the UK for a second tenure at Palace, which was followed by spells at Middlesbrough and Leeds United.
