Fans rushed to social media in droves to criticize the decision to give Manchester United a penalty against Bournemouth.

The Cherries were ahead 2-1 when the ball hit Adam Smith’s arm, and the referee immediately signaled to the spot penalty.

Bruno Fernandes scored from 12 yards to tie United, and supporters were outraged because Smith seemed to have had little time to move his arm out of the way.

PieFace, a YouTube personality and Plymouth fan, posted on X: “Disgraceful penalty decision that.”

Another fan questioned the use of VAR, stating, “What’s the purpose of VAR? In what universe is that a penalty?””The only team that gets a penalty for that is Manchester United,” a third supporter yelled.

Bournemouth took the lead after 16 minutes when Dominic Solanke scored his 17th goal of the season.

Fernandes then drew Erik ten Hag’s side level just after the half-hour mark, but the hosts answered five minutes later with Justin Kluivert retaking the lead.

Fernandes scored his second goal of the game from the penalty spot to help United salvage a point after another dismal display.

The result means United remains eighth after Newcastle passed them earlier in the day after defeating Tottenham 4-0.
