Martin Odegaard, the captain of Arsenal, has made a name for himself as one of the top midfielders in the world over the past couple of years.

The Arsenal captain has improved greatly in his role as Mikel Arteta’s right-sided number eight, routinely finding the back of the net. Since the 2022–23 season began, just five players have scored more non-penalty Premier League goals than Odegaard.

Given that all five of those players are forwards whereas the Norwegian international plays more like a midfielder, these figures appear even more astounding. The former Real Madrid playmaker scored his most recent league goal on Sunday during his team’s 3-1 victory over Manchester United, giving him a remarkable 16 non-penalty goals in the past 12 months.

Kevin De Bruyne’s latest ranking of the two players is even more perplexing given that United’s creative master Bruno Fernandes has six non-penalty goals in the same time frame, ten fewer than Odegaard. When asked to rate Fernandes, Odegaard, and James Maddison of Tottenham, the Manchester City player listed the Portugal international first, Odegaard second, and Maddison third.

De Bruyne described Fernandes as “a creative machine, just in general,” according to Sky Sports. “I think Maddison is incredibly creative, but I need to see more of him in a big squad, so that can change. Odegaard is also creative, but he’s a little more controlled. That is the reason I ranked him third.

He said, “He’s been doing it for a long time,” when asked why he ranked the United player above Arsenal’s captain. Odegaard were excellent the previous year, but he’s younger, so there are differences.

After the Gunners’ aforementioned triumph over the Red Devils, former Tottenham Hotspur player Garth Crooks made sure to give Odegaard his flowers by including him in his Premier League team of the week. His equalizer, which came 35 seconds after Manchester United had taken the lead, saved Arsenal, according to Crooks, writing for the BBC.

“The more desperate they would have been the longer the game went on without such response. The way Odegaard finished was excellent. His technique had to be flawless because the ball came from an awkward angle, and it was.

“He struck the ball so well that it sailed past Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana.
