Cole Palmer was signed by Chelsea from Manchester City before the end of the summer transfer window.
The signing of Palmer by Chelsea was one of the biggest surprises of the summer transfer season.
The 21-year-old came up through Manchester City’s junior system and was hoping for a breakthrough season in the first squad.
Palmer was gradually integrating into Man City’s first squad and had made 19 Premier League appearances for his boyhood club when Chelsea paid £40 million for him on a seven-year contract.
Palmer has revealed why he had to quit City for Chelsea, admitting that it was a strange sensation.
“I’m not saying I avoided the competition (for City positions) because I’ve never done that,” Palmer remarked.
“I’d been around the first team for a few years and wanted more opportunities to play – in my position and with more impact.”
“It was a major decision.” I knew I was travelling to London the next day when I left the training site on Thursday. It all hit me as I sat in my car, about to drive away. ‘You’ve been here 15 years,’ I was thinking.
“I’m not aware of anything else.” I’ve never borrowed anything. I’ve never lived anywhere other than Manchester. I’ve only ever travelled outside of Manchester on vacation or away games. Going there feels strange, but there is no time to spend. I need to get started.”
