Chelsea captain Reece James has been banned after confessing to ‘abusive behaviour’ towards a referee.

Chelsea captain Reece James received a one-game suspension and a £90,000 fine after admitting to a Football Association accusation of using “abusive language and behaviour” towards a match referee.

The 23-year-old admits approaching referee Jarred Gillett during last month’s 1-0 home loss to Aston Villa, which he missed due to a hamstring injury.

James will serve his suspension on the weekend trip to Burnley, which he was previously scheduled to miss due to the same ailment.

“Reece James has been given a one-match suspension and a £90,000 fine for breaching FA Rule E3 at Chelsea’s Premier League match against Aston Villa on Sunday 24 September,” according to a statement.

“The defender admitted to using inappropriate, insulting, and abusive language and behaviour towards a match official in the tunnel following the final whistle.”

“An independent Regulatory Commission imposed these sanctions following a hearing, and its written reasons for them will be published at the earliest opportunity.”

James is working hard to recover after appearing in only the first game of the season, and he wants to be available after the upcoming international break.

Malo Gusto has deputised competently at right-back but is now suspended for three games after receiving a straight red card against Villa.

He will also miss the trip to face Vincent Kompany’s newly promoted team, although he will be available to play against Arsenal following the international break.
