Following their 5-1 loss to Tranmere on Tuesday, Salford City fired manager Neil Wood.

The 40-year-old manager led Salford to the League Two Playoffs the previous year, but he has had a difficult season as the squad has been on the verge of relegation.

The team, which is owned by Manchester United’s Class of 92, has lost 16 games since the season began, and their most recent setback on Boxing Day against Tranmere prompted the owners to fire the manager.

An official club statement said as follows:

The head coach Neil Wood of the Salford City Football Club has announced his departure.

The Club would like to express its gratitude to Neil for his tireless efforts over the past 18 months, which included helping the Club achieve its best-ever finish in Sky Bet League Two last season. We also wish him luck in his next football endeavours.

“The team’s preparation for Friday’s match against Grimsby Town will be handled by Assistant Coach Simon Wiles while the search for a new manager gets underway immediately.”

Wood was the manager of the Manchester United U23 squad before to coming to Salford.

He participated in Man United’s academy throughout his playing career, although he was never called up to the main squad.

He became a manager for Salford in May 2022 and oversaw 88 games in which they competed.

Assistant manager Simon Wiles will be in control of Salford’s team when they play Grimbsy Town on Friday.

Legends of Manchester United, including Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, and Gary Neville, are among the club’s owners.
