Manchester City and Chelsea sent warning they will face ‘expulsion’ from the Premier League if guilty of FFP breaches

Since its inception, Financial Fair Play has never been a more contentious topic in English football, as evidenced by the fact that two clubs have already lost points due to FFP violations in the 23–24 season.

Some supporters are perplexed by the manner these point deductions have been applied, as Nottingham Forest has been awarded six fewer points than Everton was originally sanctioned.

Though it has been established that City and Chelsea may receive the harshest punishment possible, there has been conjecture regarding how the Premier League will handle teams like them as a result of this seeming inconsistency.

Robert Glancy KC, sports law expert Mark Hovell, and accounting specialist Steve Holt outlined the possible penalties Premier League clubs might encounter in their 52-reason analysis of the Forest issue.

According to The Commission, the penalties can “range from a warning through to expulsion from the Premier League.”

“Where a PSR breach is’minor,’ it will be the responsibility of other Commissions to ascertain whether any deduction of points is appropriate, necessary, or proportionate,” the Commission continued.

However, if the infraction is appropriately classified as “major,” it’s possible that even the most severe punishment—such as expulsion—is more suitable.

It is very obvious that City and Chelsea’s charges, as well as any future charges, would fall under the category of “major” in light of the accusations made against them both.

Here is the current status of both clubs:

All 115 of the accusations made against the Etihad Club in February 2023 are categorically denied. The protracted Commission case is expected to begin in October or November, with a final ruling not anticipated until the 24/25 season in March or April.

Chiefs at Chelsea brought attention to payments made illegally to agents and other individuals in the Roman Abramovich era. Importantly, despite a continuing inquiry, the Premier League has not officially penalised them despite the fact that they were originally fined £8.6 million by Uefa.
