Manchester United have appointed a new chief executive and technical director, but they have yet to secure a sporting director. Their primary target for this role is Dan Ashworth, who has been placed on leave by Newcastle United as he seeks to join Manchester United.

Negotiations between the clubs have been challenging, with Newcastle demanding high compensation for Ashworth, which Ineos, the parent company of Manchester United, has so far refused to pay.

According to ESPN, Manchester United is close to finalizing a deal for Ashworth. The Athletic also reported that terms have been agreed upon, allowing Ashworth to start his new role immediately. This is a significant development, as it was initially expected that Ashworth wouldn’t be able to start until after the current transfer window, possibly in September. Previously, The Telegraph had indicated that Newcastle might prevent Ashworth from starting until 2026, when his current contract expires.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has voiced his frustration over the delays, highlighting the challenges of bringing new talent into the team when they are on gardening leave.

Negotiations for Ashworth began in February, and after a five-month stalemate, there is now hope for a resolution.

Additionally, Manchester United is set to welcome chief executive Omar Berrada, who has been on gardening leave since January. Berrada is expected to start on July 13. This marks a critical step forward for the Ineos project, with the potential to accelerate Ratcliffe’s masterplan for the club.
