Manchester United’s quest to secure a top summer signing might unsettle Premier League stars Virgil van Dijk and Nathan Ake. Under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s new football operations leadership, the Red Devils are intent on enhancing their squad during the summer transfer window.
A central defender is a top priority, and Manchester United is reportedly progressing in their pursuit of Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt. The 24-year-old Dutchman, who previously played under United manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax, remains highly valued by his former coach, as reported by Sky Sports Germany.
De Ligt transferred from Juventus to Bayern two years ago for around £68 million, a similar fee to what Juve paid Ajax in 2019. It is believed that Bayern Munich might be willing to sell for the right offer.
Currently playing for the Netherlands in Euro 2024, De Ligt has received commendation from his Premier League teammates. Liverpool’s Van Dijk has openly praised the young defender, remarking in 2019: “He’s clearly an excellent defender. He can still improve and knows that, but his performances at such a young age are impressive. I’m delighted to play alongside him for the Netherlands.”
Manchester City’s Ake has similarly praised De Ligt, drawing comparisons to Van Dijk. He once told Goal: “De Ligt is still very young, yet he has played many top-level games and for the Dutch national team. What he’s achieving is remarkable. Everyone has great confidence in him. He’s quick, strong, good in the air, and excellent on the ball. He also scores frequently from set-pieces, sharing many attributes with Van Dijk.”
If United succeeds in signing De Ligt, who hasn’t played at Euro 2024 yet with Ronald Koeman opting for Stefan de Vrij, Van Dijk and Ake will recognize the caliber of player United is acquiring. Despite limited appearances in Germany, the 24-year-old is still regarded as one of Europe’s top central defenders, having made 30 appearances for Bayern Munich during an injury-affected season.
In addition to the Netherlands international, United is also reportedly targeting deals for PSG’s Manuel Ugarte, Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee, and Everton’s Jarrad Braithwaite this summer.
