After securing a contract extension that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2026, the Dutch manager is focused on strengthening his defense, which suffered its worst season since 1978/79. With Raphael Varane’s departure, Jarrad Branthwaite, Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt, and Lille’s Leny Yoro have been identified as potential signings.

Man Utd’s Second Branthwaite Bid Rejected

Everton stand firm on their £70m asking price

Varane and Lisandro Martinez missed significant portions of last season due to injuries, forcing midfielder Casemiro to play in central defense seven times across all competitions. Consequently, Manchester United’s interest in Branthwaite, a Carlisle-born defender, is well known. Branthwaite became their primary target ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Athletic reported that Manchester United’s initial £35 million bid for Branthwaite was rejected by Everton. The 13-time Premier League champions then made a second offer of approximately £45 million (plus £5 million in add-ons), which was also turned down. Journalist Luckhurst, posting on X (formerly Twitter), confirmed that Everton’s asking price remains above £70 million.

Everton values the promising 21-year-old similarly to Josko Gvardiol, Wesley Fofana, and Harry Maguire, and they are unlikely to lower their valuation until late in the transfer window. Having played 35 Premier League games last season, Branthwaite is considered crucial by Sean Dyche and his team, despite being excluded from England’s preliminary Euro 2024 squad.
