Legendary Manchester United player Wayne Rooney has disclosed that he would balance his new role as manager of Plymouth Argyle with his obligations to the European Championship.
After stepping down as Birmingham City’s head coach, the former United striker rejoined the managerial ranks four months later. Sacked after just 83 days in command, Rooney was a surprising appointment at St Andrew’s.
He left the dugout to work as a commentator in the studio, first for Sky Sports and then the BBC, covering United’s FA Cup victory against rival Manchester City. But when Ian Foster was fired during their relegation struggle this season, he will have to keep Argyle in the Championship.
“Every day is a working day now, whether that’s here or with the kids, and obviously, I have certain duties with the European Championships,” he said to Argyle TV, describing his hectic schedule.
“The main goal of each day is to bring in players, collaborate with the coaches to determine our style of play, and prepare for preseason practice.
“I’m delighted about our busy month, but what’s truly exciting is pre-season and working closely with the players.”
Rooney will be managing at Home Park for the fourth time after stints at Derby County, DC United, and the Midlands club. After his previous stint in the Championship, the 38-year-old will likely continue to face pressure on the hot seat, but Rooney thinks his transfer to the southwest of England is the “right step.”
“I am quite happy. “It was a thorough process with many managers interviewed for the position, and happily the club felt I was the right person for the job to take over as Argyle’s next head coach,” the legendary United player added.
“I am eager to begin and get to know the players and staff. There will be a lot of work ahead of us in the next month before the preseason begins,” the coach said.
